I pulled up at Ho’okipa just like every day for a windsurf session. As I arrived and start rigging, the lifeguards launched the jetski into the water and stabbed this sign in front of the beach(sign featured below!)…yikes! I then started thinking to myself that I should not go out, but than I thought again that sharks are always out there. I was just hesitant because some one saw it and there was a sign now on the beach. Crazy what the mind does. I decided to go out anyways after 20 minutes of debating on the beach. I can say my hair stayed dry the longest ever! I fell once and swam the fastest I could. I tried to stay calm but the thought of a shark was definitely in my mind.

I hardly ever surf here, but with this big swell it was actually kind of fun!
Thanks for he pics Shaun Stodder!

Vana - the Hawaiian sea urchin… don’t step on these when you’re out in the water!

Kevin Pritchard capturing a fun moment of mine in the Ho’okipa winter waves! Thanks Kevin!

Today we had really good conditions for windsurfing. The past couple days have been super calm or gusty offshore winds, but today was great! I loved it! The waves were a good size, the wind was steady, and the sun was shining.

Happy Bappy Be - Diddle Li’ Day to me! I am now 23! : )
Thanks for all the birthday wishes!

The Dominican Republic Butterfly Effect 2009 video is now online! The 1st Dominican Republic Butterfly Effect and 12th event overall took place this past July. We had a great turn out of 30 women and girls. The day started with a beach clean up on the Cabarete beach. The conditions were light so I taught a intro SUP (stand-up paddle) lesson and we were all off! Everyone picked up stand-up paddling very quickly. After we had some nice snacks provided by local cafes and at night we had the closing ceremony. We had a huge raffle at the ending ceremony and raised money for the DREAM PROJECT. It was a great event and we are working on the 2nd Annual Butterfly Effect Dominican Republic. For more pics of the event and all the other Butterfly Effects visit www.betheeffect.com.
Thank you Charly and Michelle for putting together the fun clip.

There was a little bump on the south side over these past couple days. It is rare to have a south swell like this during the start of winter. We took advantage of it and headed over to see what kind of waves were breaking. It was fun, maybe head high( if your lucky) in Lahaina and I heard it was bigger on Wailea/Kihei side. It was an overall fun session, but with the inconsistent waves we had to be very very patient and wait for the good ones!

Wow! What a fun winter! Day after day there has been some many fun rides. My arms are so sore, but I can’t help but paddle out for another session. The pain goes away on the first waves, so that’s good. Tracy Kraft was out there again taking some awesome shots.

It has been a solid week of clean, glassy fun surf! This picture was taken by Tracy Kraft during another one of my morning surf sessions. Thanks Tracy!

The Butterfly Effect is spreading around the world - congratulations! But what’s next?
Yes, the Butterfly Effect continues to spread its’ wings to all corners of the world. It is very exciting to see where the next effect develops. We have just finished with the first Butterfly Effect trip which was in Tahiti this past September. It went over extremely well and we are looking forward to making more trips in addition to one-day downwind adventures. Juliana Shelefis now organizing the next event in Israel and then we will both meet in December/January for the Brazil 3rd Annual B.E. event. The 2010 schedule will be out soon but at the looks of it, it won’t be slowing down at all with bigger and better events. Be sure to check out the website www.betheeffect.com to view all the official events that are coming up.
Some sceptics might argue that - especially with girls doing SUP only - there might in the end not be too many benefits for the sport of WINDSURFING. What do you think? Are all these sports (surf, windsurf, kiteboard, SUP) equal from your point of view?
I think women getting out in the water no matter the sport is a good thing. I started off just surfing and I loved the water so much that I wanted to be out there in every kind of condition. Surfing lead me to windsurfing, then I had to try kiting, and stand-up paddling. I think SUP is a great intro into water sports that will benefit windsurfing and kiting in the end.

You seem to be an excellent organizer! What kind of job are you dreaming of?
I am living my dream job of being an event producer in an event that I am really passionate about. I love how the Butterfly Effect is not only promoting women in water sports but gets involved with the communities that it goes to. In the last effect we “butterflies” had several days of teaching the kids of Tahiti how to do windsurfing and kite-surfing. We also did clinics for women and taught them new techniques and tricks. When we are able to give back to the community we visit and at the same time enjoy the local surf breaks and wind, it is a double bonus!
What do you think about competitive windsurfing, especially the (woman) PWA tour and it’s future?
I think competitive windsurfing is good for the sport. The women on the tour are doing a great job. They are really pushing the level and encouraging girls to keep riding and do their best. I would like to see more women be a part of the PWA and more support from sponsors towards women. I am hoping that The Butterfly Effect can be foundation of getting more women active in windsurfing and thus have more women be involved with the PWA. The Butterfly Effect brings more women out on the water to just have fun and that’s where improvements for a sport has to begin, with just having fun. From this foundation it will continue to benefit the sport and its’ contest because more women on the water will result in more girls continuing the sport to a competitive level.
You are also very professional in getting (and keeping) sponsors. Any tips, any advice for our younger “windgirls”?
If you are begin to receive sponsorships, make sure you treat it as a job. Stay on top of it… fill your sponsors in with what your doing, trips you go on, pictures, contests, and ask for feedback. It’s great to build a close relationship with your sponsors and be appreciative of them and their support of you.
Finally: What do you think about our new “World of Windgirls” website and community?
I think “World of Windgirls” is great. There are always cool things for water girls to check out like new blog posts, pictures, wind events from around the world, and friends that share the same passion of water sports. It is a great opportunity for water women in the world to show what their home break is like or to share their dreams of where they would like to go next. I also like it because you can keep in touch with the windsurfing friends you meet along the beach! Thanks World of Windgirls!

We have had a growing swell these past couple of days. The wind was super calm which made some beautiful glassy days out on the water. Dave Baker caught a few pics and even my one big air drop! Everyone including myself thought I was going to eat it, but I actually made it! I totally remember this moment..

The Butterfly Effect Israel celebrates the first ever water women downwinder
The Butterfly Effect aims to capture great moments, share and inspire women to go for their dreams and live a life that gives back to communities and make the world better one smile at a time. Lastly, we hope to instill self confidence, support, and encouragement to all women associated with this event.

The Butterfly Effect announces its first ever all women, water sport event non-competitive in Israel this October. It will be a one-day downwinder of windsurf, kite, SUP, surf, and water sport clinics at North Beach, Eilat. Usually, it is a short mission that is challenging but safe to push the level of women in water sports. All women are welcome from any skill level. It is for free! We are encouraging women to pre- sign up at local surf shops or even better sending an email at butterflyeffectmaui@gmail.com requesting the sign up BE Israel. This event is uniquely designed to promote women in water sports.

Today we taught the local women of Tahiti how to do stand-up paddling. Many of them already did Va’a (canoe), so they picked up paddling really fast. It was another beautiful day here and just right for a morning SUP.
Thanks Dakine, Te Mata’i Windsurf Center and Matiko for being the top sponsors of The Butterfly Effect Tahiti!

We have been having a great time teaching the community in Tahiti windsurf, kitesurf, and stand-up paddle. The kids here learn so fast it’s unbelievable! They have so much excitement and passion for it. We are glad we are able to share this with them.

We had an Butterfly Effect opening ceremony at a local surf shop called Inside Tahiti. The next morning we found ourselves in the newspaper. Later in the day we had drinks and a welcoming to Mahina with the mayor! They were very nice and were happy to have us in Tahiti, enjoying their area and waters, and helping out the community by teaching the kids and women how to do water sports.

We all made it here for the Butterfly Effect Tahiti trip. So far its been surreal and so much has happened already that it feels like we have been here way longer than just a day! The main downwind will be held next Sunday. For the remaining of the week we will be announcing our where-abouts on the local tv and radio.
The weather has been perfect for us and are already tired from a long day on the water. Lots of news to come but we might be on a boat visiting islands for day or two so bare with us on the updates.
Check out our action packed BUTTERFLY van!!

Emmanuel of Te Matai Windsurf Center has been another great international host of The Butterfly Effect. Thank You!

This trip was my first winter trip ever and definitely won’t be the last. Snowboarding is a great sport and is great training for water sports. It felt like ever muscle in my body was used which means it will just be better and stronger when I get on the water.. I hope! We had a great sunny day and looks like the rest of the week will follow in the sunshine pattern. : )
Today I had my first real”wipe-out”. We went down the blue squares for a while and at the end of the day I wanted to try out this bigger hill that I saw when we were on the chairlift. Not to many people were going down it but I just had to try. Bad idea. It was super icy and super steep. I was trying my best but my board slipped out from under me, I slide down hitting my face on the hard ice, and knocking my googles off. My face was burning a bit and I thought it was a lot worse than it actually was with only a little bloody nose. : /

Thanks Christiano from Italy, for the kinds words of my blog and picture! Glad you enjoy the posts and I am inspired to keep blogging when I met people like you. Aloha and best of winds to you!

We went to THE MOST amazing pond today. It was so beautiful, unlike anything I have ever seen before. The water was so clear with a bright blue bottom. All around the pond was thick greenery and lush forest. I couldn’t tell you where it is if I tried. All I know is we turned onto a random road pass some sheep and on a tiny little trail that looked like it lead to not anywhere special.
If I lived close I think I would visit this pond as much as I go to Ho’okipa. The pond was so inviting that we all jumped in even though the water is ice cold! I think I have a little sore throat from the cold water but it was worth it.

Today was the best day yet! It was so So SO AMAZING!
We went to Whakapapa and rode all over the place. The sun came out and the trails were awesome! I had the biggest smile on my face (even a little google tan!). We rode all day long and met up with some friends that took us through some crazy double black roped off trails/valleys! I said I didn’t want to go but you don’t really have a choice when you are at the top. You just have to go!
My favorite was a trail called Valley Highway. It was like a big wave that I could keep riding on and on. It was crazy. I even tried my first little jump! I really can’t believe how much I am enjoying snowboarding. I never knew how fun it can be!
The only down side is that I feel permanently exhausted.

We got some good boarding in today but it was pretty intense. It was super stormy and what they call a “white out”. I could barely see 10 feet in front of me when I went down the mountain. We were constantly looking for the markers to guide our way. Although many lifts were closed we still were able to ride down many times until we were exhausted with frozen fingers. Our fingers are crossed for not only the mountain to be open, but to have good weather this time too!
Yes, that’s me with not one piece of skin showing.. covered in triple layer from head to toe! BRRRRR!

The mountains were closed again today due to rain and gale winds. The forecast looks better tomorrow, so our fingers are crossed! Even with no snow action we have been having a good time baking, visiting Huka Falls and my favorite, finding secret thermal pools!! It is so amazing that you can find hot water ponds right next to freezing rivers in the middle of winter here! Crazy but I love it!

HUKA FALLS

The mountain was fogged in with bad weather today. We had a break from the snow and went over to check out Rotorua. Instead of snowboarding a black diamond, Tim thought it would be a good day to take me down the mountains luging…in the rain!
It was wet and cold but we thought since we came this far we had to go. I had my thermal socks on this time but just normal pants and a jacket when we really needed to be decked out in waterproof snowboard wear. Luging was super fun but by the third round down the hill we were both drenched and chivering. And to top it off, when we were racing down the last course, we went a little too fast on the slippery road, got speed wobble, knocked each other off course a bit and just barely regained to control to avoid a gnarly wipeout on concrete!
Going this route I am a little worried on what might be in store for me tomorrow! : /

So, today was my second time snowboarding.. ever! We went to check out the other side of the mountain, Turoa. Tim thought it was a good idea to go straight to the top. I went along because I didn’t know any better. I have to say it was a beautiful view because we were the highest you can get. Then I realized I would have to go down! : /
It was the first time for both of us to go down for the very top, so neither of us knew the best way to go. I just followed along and had a pretty hard and scarey time trying to get to the bottom. I had to remind myself to breath numerous times because of the shock I got at looking down what I had to snowboard. I was extremely exhausted and a little shaky when I finally got to the chairlift. At the bottom we checked out the path we went on and it turned out that we took a black diamond path instead of the nice blue easy one!! I couldn’t believe that we mistakenly did that trail but at least from then on the blue squares were just perfect for me. : )

Wow! Snowboarding is so fun! We went up to Whakapapa ski field on Mount. Ruapehu. I was lucky to have my 1st snowboarding group lesson get turned into a private lesson because no one else showed up for the class. It was a one on one class and was able to learn a lot faster, which I was super stoked about!
Some key learning tips that really helped me was:
Look at where I was going
Keep the balance distributed evenly on the board unlike surfing where I turn the board by more pressure on my back foot.
Wear thermal socks, not the fuzzy ones from Costco!! My toes were freezing until I bought a pair of the real warm thermal/wool kind. :)
And of course just practice, which I need a lot more of!

Arriving back in the Wellingotn ariport feels a bit strange. New Zealand is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. I am excited to meet up with friends and adventure into the snow! It is crazy how opposite and ,in my opiuon, toy-townish it is here, takes a bit to get used to!
The driving is on the other side, the people talk english but not the same that I do, everyone is super friendly, the air is so crisp and fresh unlike the humidity in Hawaii, sheep everywhere instead on sugarcane …..all good though!

Last chance to sign up!

The press link to your right is updated with the latest coverage of the Butterfly Effects and more!

A few of us girls that will be going to the Tahiti Butterfly Effect met up to practice SUP. It was super windy out with extremely bumpy waters, but always fun!

Thank you to Michelle Bourdeau for being the “local Butterfly” organizer of the Dominican Republic Butterfly Effect. It was such an amazing event that set the standard of the B.E. even higher. We had such a great opportunity to work with the DREAM Project and I hope to incoorporate more charity work with the B.E. like what we did in this past event. Michelle is also an extremely talented massage therapist from Canada. If you ever visit the Dominican Republic be sure to visit www.cabaretemassagetherapy.com.
Vela Windsurf Center was also a huge support along with Cabarete Beach Houses ( Nanny Esstes). Cabarete Beach Houses has amazing vacation rentals for your stay in the D.R.
Thanks so much to all the sponsors of The Butterfly Effect.
Main Event Sponsors were Da Kine, Naish, Matiko, and Cabarete Beach Houses.
Local Sponsors and contributors included Cabarete Villas, Cabarete East, Cabarete Language Institute, Cabarete Massage Therapy, Carib Wind Center, Claro Restaurant, Dream Buz Media, Dream Project, EH Kiteboarding, Fred Joyas, Iguana Mama, IKO, Kaenon, Kite Club Cafe, LAX Restaurant, Laurel Eastman Kite Boarding, MiGym, Plus Magazine, 321 Take Off, 4T Tours, Trips, Treks and Travel, and Vela Windsurf Center.

All over the world there seems to be a “Kite Beach”. This beach in Cabarete was the busiest kite beach I have ever seen. I haven’t kited for a while and was a little nervous with so many kites flying around, but it turned out to be a great day on the water.

Volunteering for a program like this is so gratifying. I have to say my voice is officially gone and my energy has vanished. Explaining the games and lessons in spanish and trying to keep it exciting while holding the kids attention and have them corporate and understand is very exhausting but none the less fun! The Dream Project has done an amazing job at making a difference here in Cabarete, Dominican Republic. I truly feel so good after this day of going there and helping out. We wish we had more time to spend with the kids. Just from this experience I have learned a lot and I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.
If you want to donate to a great organization please chack out their website.
I am so pleased to say that together with The Butterfly Effect and Dream Project raffle we raised 11,000 pesos from the night of The Butterfly Effect raffle. I think it is a great start and am extremely happy to see this double or triple for next year! We also had a chance to help out with the Learning Center of Cabarete. Thanks to all the sponsors that helped make such a successful event:

Dream Project - Cabarete, Dominican from Tatiana Howard on Vimeo.
The moto-concho is how we get everywhere. I love it! We just have to be careful not to get a ”Dominican Tattoo”. A “Dominican tattoo” is when you get a huge burn from the hot motor by getting off the wrong side of the moto. Many tourists remain with a scar on their leg that will always remind them of the Dominican Republic. So remember, if your ever here and ride a moto make sure you get off and on the LEFT side!

On July 22nd @ 9am was the sign up at Vela Windsurf Center of warm welcomes of all types of Butterflies around the world coming together to Cabarete to enjoy the excitement of one thing in common, the love for water sports. Michelle Bourdeou, the local butterfly, found out about The BUtterfly Effect and had a vision of having one in her home town of Cabarete. Thanks to her hard work and months of planning, the day of the effect began to unfold more beautifully then either of us could have imagined. We had all types from experts to beginners working together as one big group to prove that ” Girls are out there on the water having fun and enjoying what life and ocean sports have to offer!”.
As the girls grabbed their Dakine lycras and butterfly clips they all looked out on the beach and wanted to make a difference for the environment with a Beach Clean Up. The girls just grabbed the gloves and trash bags and started cleaning with the Dream Project. Believe it or not, you might look out and see that the beach looks clean but underneath the white sand is the a lot trash. You can tell that us butterflies love to keep our beaches looking fresh.
After the wonderful introduction of SUP by Tatiana, we all worked together to make this effect work. As a big bundle of butterflies, we helped each other grab boards and work together get out in the water with motivated each other to stay together and just have fun!
From kayaks to SUP, lots of laughs and smiles is what you can see in each others faces. Across the water would be girls screaming to each other, “You can Do it..keep it up!”
Flapping our wings together as one big group of girls is what kept up working together and to just have fun in Cabarete!
Ending with photos and yummy treats by the following sponsors is how butterflies love to end the day of fun and laughter!

WHat a day!! Still feeling jet lagged..we are hanging on to make the best out of our fantastic trip! It’s about 8:13 pm and we are getting ready for dinner! They have dinner later in the DR . Time is usually not an issue..no one really worries about being later or early here, because about 85% of the people are late but it does not matter because we are in paradise! p.s. We went grocery shopping this morning, it was fun, but we have no clue what happened to our bread! we were both craving a sandwich for lunch but when we got home - no bread!! ha ha. so instead we had a yummy mango with tropical yogurt!! -Melissa B.

The Butterfly Effect continues to develop in cities worldwide. It has been created into more that just a windsurf downwinder on Maui. It has grown into an international water women movement. This movement is not limited by age, talent, nor sport and is judgement free. With our open minds and creative energy, women in watersports are getting together like never before. Just a couple days after the successful event in Hood River, Orgeon, the B.E. unraveled in Kiel, Germany. It has been really nice here in California and we got to take some water toys out!
Since the surf has been non-existent we had to find a way to make some of our own waves. I was only wishing I had these toys in Hawaii for the winter swells!

Thanks to all the sponsors that are making this event happen. Especially big thanks to Cabarete Beach Houses, Dakine, and Naish for their support. Anyone interested in attending please pre-sign up a the Vela Windsurf Center. See you next Wednesday!

Summer is a great time to catch up with sponsors, especially if they are based on the mainland. I got to visit the new Kaenon headquarters in Costa Mesa and meet up with my team manager. He showed me a couple of the really nice new shades of the season. I really like the Georgia and Calais, but there are so many new cool styles to choose from. Check out their website. www.kaeonon.com

Its is always fun to bike along the beach in California with the ultimate beach cruisers, especially with my bro and his fiance!

The first ever Butterfly Effect Hood River took place Thursday, July 2nd. The wind never turned up but it didn’t stop the girls from doing the same. We were a group of 28 that jumped on SUP boards after our yoga stretch/warm up at the Event Site. Please be sure to check out more photos of this event and the Germany event on The Butterfly Effects NEW UPDATED WEBSITE.

It was hard to walk against the winds blowing down this sand dune. I think this one is actually bigger than the ones in Jericoacoara, Brazil. We made it to the top and ran to the bottom. FUn fun!

Kiwanda Sand Dune from Tatiana Howard on Vimeo.
The water was cold! 46 degrees. Brr! It was my first time surfing in booties, gloves and a hoodie! It actually wasn’t too bad. I could surf for just over an hour before my fingers and toes felt like they were burning and freezing at the same time.

We heard there were some waves out at the coast and that’s all we needed to hear for motivation. We packed up our vehicles and headed out to the Oregon Coast.
I remember the last time I was in Oregon, the cherries were so delicious. We had to pick some up for the trip, even though they only lasted for 5 minutes!

The Oregon coast is just under two hours away from Hood River. It has a completely different feel to it than the gorge and is full of lush greenery. Once you reach the edge of the mountains you have a amazing view of an endless beach.

Our first stop was a cool little beach called Shortsands. It was full of surf and drift wood. To get there, we had to walk along a little river where the trees were home to hobits or looked like elephants. We searched in the tress to find hobits but didn’t have much luck.

The winds were howling just the day before the annual festival, but I guess it is now a tradition for the wind to disappear on the actual day of the “Wind-fest”. Despite the absence of wind, the Windfest was a happening place to be. There was freestyle clinics by the local women rippers Zoe and Roxanne, Intro to SUP with Michi Schweiger, and all windsurfing brands had their demos and new product out to try.
I had fun catching up with my sponsors such as my Dakine team manager Bill.

I had a great time sailing at the Hatchery. It is a little sailing spot on the Washington side of the Gorge. It is a windy spot to rig, rocky spot to launch, but a good place to meet up with old friends.

My dad had the chance to come see me sail and to be my personal photographer!

If your in “the Hood”, stop by Big Winds at 10:00am on Thursday, July 2nd! See you there!

Thanks for all the support in Germany! We can’t wait for a wonderful event.
Germany, July 4th, 2009
The Butterfly Effect announces its first ever all women, non-competitive, water sport event in Germany. It will be a one-day downwinder of windsurf, kite, SUP, surf, and water sport clinics at Kiel, North Germany. A downwinder means to set out in a distance from one location down the coast to another location. Usually, it is a short mission that is challenging but safe to push the level of women in water sports. All women are welcome from any skill level. It is for free! We are encouraging women to pre- sign up at surf shops in Kiel, Lübeck, Hamburg, Münster. This event is uniquely designed to promote women in water sports.
Downwinder Details
The downwinder begins from Heidkate and continues to Brasilien_ (west wind), with a break at Kalifornien. Heidtake is one of the hot spots of Kiel. It’s a wide sandy beach with a beautiful atmosphere. The distance of the downwind is around 2.5 km from Heidtake to Kalifornien and 2 km to Brasilien. The wind usually blows from west direction and it is suggested to bring a sail around 5.0 m or kite size around 7m to 9m. For stand-up paddling any size is fine. It is possible to join the group from Heidtake, Kalifornien or even being part on the clinic at Heidkate.

I love the Celestial Cinema, and this year the Maui Film Festival is featuring The Women and the Waves directed by Heather Hudson. I am also really excited to see High Water by Dana Brown. I am a huge fan of their past movie, Endless Summer 2, and have watched it over a hundred times, literally! I want to talk them into doing a Endless Summer 3 (Girls Version!)
That would be my dream come true! The show will start at 8:00PM, Wednesday the 17th, under the stars in Wailea. Click here to visit their website for more details. All three of the movies below will be shown. Maybe next year we will have The Butterfly Effect Maui movie done and able to show!

Even if you have a long tiring day at work on Maui, you can’t complain when you can view a sunset like this almost every evening.

If you are there already come join in and if you want to go contact me for trip details.

Too much monkey business these days!

Its been a hectic start of the summer, can’t wait for more all-beach days under the palms! :)

Cloudy skies clear away, and wind and waves come to play!
It’s been really vogy lately, but now the sky is so clear and beautiful out. Nature is so awesome how it can be cloudy and then the next day just magically clear. Now, only if I can learn to take this concept of “clarity” ,like the skies naturally do, and apply it to my everyday life. So many times I feel overwhelmed and so unclear about things wondering “what if this happens and they do that then what?”, or “how am I going to do this if that is the case?”, etc. In the end, it always seems to work out and fall into beauty and perfection. Once I have made it clear in my mind exactly what my goals and aims are, it just seems to unravel exactly how it should be. Funny how that works. The hard part is the process of becoming clear. I guess its just time, knowledge, patience, and trust that the universe will work with you in what ever you set your mind to.

That’s right! Floaties help tighten abs, cheek muscles (lower and upper)and is beneficial for the body and mind. Why? Because when you get tossed around the rocky coastline of Mauis’ norhtshore, you can’t help but laugh your booty off!

The “Effect” is preparing for flight once again. This time to Tahiti. We had our first meeting yesterday in Paia, Maui. This group of girls will be a part of the Butterfly Effects’ first ever trip! It is going to be a week long adventure of women surfing, windsurfing, kiting, stand-up paddling and more! It is going to be a trip not to miss. If you’re interested in being a part of this, please send me an email so I can get you on the list. Space is limited, so the sooner to confirm the better. International water women of elite to novice level will be attending and will also be sharing their love of the ocean by teaching underprivileged Tahitian women these water sports. Stay tuned for more information.

Also, the waves have been pretty good for May! I’m trying to get as much surf in while it lasts!

Just trying to find some treasures.

Check out this eel!

Vana (sea urchins) cover the bottom of Ho’okipa. This is why you always want to try and fall “lighty”, and not hit the bottom!

Finding Nemo

Wow, what a race! With no wind on your back to help push your way down the coast, the race was hot, hard and overall exhausting! It was a great workout for the body and mind too! Olukai did a great job with organization and gave me new ideas for the next Butterfly Effect!
Below is a map of the 8-mile course. Maliko to Kanaha with a beach run at the end.

Here, I begin not realizing exactly what I am in for in these calm conditions. Every paddle stroke was how far you got, not much swells to surf either.

As you can see, this race had an awesome turn out. I still can’t believe how much this sport has grown over the years. Pretty cool.

What a fun night! The drummers were great and so fun to dance to! Loved it! We worked hard on the dance and were glad to share it with an audience.

I am getting ready to perform a samba dance with the Barabajaba drumers! Come check it out!
World Rhythms Dance Concert by Barabajaba
Thursday, May 14th, 9:30pm to 1am at Casanova’s in Makawao

Today I tested my new Naish SUP board, the “Glide”, with a down winder from Maliko to Kanaha. I liked the board a lot!! My bother joined me, but he couldn’t really keep up with me and my new equipment…
See you this weekend at the Olukai Challange. I’ll be the one leading the pack…. I hope!

I was just going through some pics over the past 3 years from when The Butterfly Effect started. Check out how much its grown in Maui.

It’s summer time now with tiny waves and light winds. Its a good time to start training with aerial silks! I love this. I haven’t been doing it that long, but my friend and fellow surf buddy Marina has been teaching. It is pretty hard and they make it look so easy. Just one climb up and down the rope is exhausting!

Just cruzin’ the pools..

Fake lashes, wings, and pantyhose are all quite foreign to me being a beach girl, but I committed to it all and had a great time! There were some really amazing jewelry designs and I even got to wear one of the most expensive rings! ; ) I made sure not to lose it!
Talia Gangini had one of her pieces in the show and also helped us get ready with makeup and hair!

Having long hair made it hard to put the wig on. We did it though!

Brianna and I back stage

Showing off the lovely jewels

Strike a pose!

The water has been so blue and the waves have been so fun lately! Its been really great for May and I am enjoying it while it lasts, because summertime with tiny waves is just around the corner. Pete Cabrinha took those shots of me diving under the cloud-like explosions of the sea!

No wind and vog make it pretty hot here. So, you gotta hit the pool! : )

The Hui is getting ready for their upcoming fashion show and exhibtion that will take place next week Wednesday. We have our poses ready so watch out! : ) It is going to be quite the show! For a sneak peak of some of the jewelry click here. My piece that will be in the exhibition is featured on their blog so go take a look!

Juliana and I had a coffee with Mark from Destination Kiteboarding and talked about the B.E. that he came across when he was visiting Maui. He had some questions about it all and we sat down to answer. He put together a really nice article about his experience and outlook on the Butterfly Effect. Click here or the above link to view.

Thanks to Mixed Media Service, I am now able to update my press page. See to the right or click this link to view.

Hana, taro, awa, lau lau, poi, poke balls, sun, beach, taro bread, hula, music, friends, art, fun.. all in one!

I am really excited that a piece of jewelry that I made was chosen to be apart of this upcoming jewelry exhibition and show held at the Hui! This is my first time entering into an art exhibition and I have to say it feels pretty good when your accepted! I am so happy. I will also be a part of the fashion show so that is exciting as well! I am curious how this fashion show will be, what I will do and wear! : )

The Butterfly Effect Cabarete has teamed up with the Cabarete Classic. While I am here in Hawaii catching warm glassy surf, my friends and fellow “Butterflies” are sailing across icy cold waters in Germany! Andrea and Marie participated in The Butterfly Effect Brazil in 2008. We had the downwind adventure from Cumbuco to Taiba. They were so stoked about the Butterfly Effect, that they wanted to spread the aloha back to their home. Now they are helping us organize The Butterfly Effect Germany around the beginning of July. Stay tuned for more details!

Any “butterflies” that are interested in doing a SUP downwind race your chance is coming soon! Olukai was super supportive of The Butterfly Effect Maui this year and we are really appreciative of them. It is fun to do the downwind in a big group so I think I will be signing the entry form soon!
Inaugural OluKai Ho’olaulea event will be May 16-17 on Maui. Maliko to Lae’ula (Kanaha Beach) 8 mile downwind run with 100 Yard Beach Run Finish. This Ho’olaule’a is benefit for the non-profits that they support at OluKai Footwear and are a part of their ‘Ohana GiveBack Program…the Hawaii Junior Lifeguards and Maui Cultural Lands.

Kevin posted all his pictures from the Butterfly Effect and they are online now! It is super easy to order prints straight from the site. There are so many photos and am sure you will have fun finding yourself! Click here to start viewing.

Saturday, April 11th was a beautiful and very blessed day. Over 100 women gathered at Ho’okipa for Maui’s 3rd Annual Butterfly Effect. This was our biggest turn out yet and it doubles in size every year. Juliana Shelef and I worked really hard and are thrilled on the outcome! We’re already talking about ideas for next year!!!
We had so much great support, from so many people, and we really couldn’t have done it with out you guys. A big mahalo to the main sponsors Dakine, Hot Sails, and Matiko Shoes.
Below are just a few of the amazing photos Kevin Pritchard was able to capture from the day. I’ll also be updating my twitter widget on the right with photo galleries some of the butterflies have already started sending me. So check back often because there will be Butterfly news for sure!!

Spring Break Surf Kids from Tatiana Howard on Vimeo.

The camp was the best yet and be sure to look for Camp Green Wave summer edition. If you are interested in your kids being a part of the camp contact me for details. All the kids loved the Dakine team matching rashies!

We had a week long camp of good waves and fun. Our last day we went to surfed the Cove in Kihei. All of the kids surfed so well and improved a lot over the week. Dakine was real supportive of the camp and styled out the kids with stickers and rashguards. There is a Menehune Kids Surf Competition this weekend and some of the kids will be competing. Lets see how they do!

Wow! Can’t believe our luck. We headed out to the south side again. We decided to go for Honolua Bay and it turned out to be perfect! No one out surfing except us!
Fun Waves! ~ No wind!~ Sunshine! WOoo!

Eating SHAVE ICE with all the surfer boys!

14 surfboards, 12 surfer boys, 2 instructors, too many boogie boards, and not enough sunscreen and food…

Lunch Break! After some fun surf at Puamana we headed for the “Black Rock” for jumping and snorkeling.

A beautiful sunset on the southside of Maui. We have many beautiful evenings here, but this one was extra special.

Ann Marie, Tiffany and I got together to teach stand up paddling to a group girls. They ranged from 8-16 years of age and all did really well. We did many different missions like paddling up-wind for breakfast, downwinders, and paddled against the Kona winds. It was a great week and we all had fun.. we also saw some whales and got close to many turtles too!

Another great samba class with my teacher Rada. Next week there is a guest teacher. It will be super fun, so if you like dancing be sure to come!

Another beautiful day on the island of Maui. Thanks Dave and Susan Baker for the great pictures!

Juliana and I have been working on the Butterfly Effect to make it the best one yet! Hope all you “Butterflies” join us! Remember its Free, just for FUN, no contest pressure or competition and is souly to promote all of us women in watersports. If SUP, kite, or windsurf you are invited to join in on the downwind adventure. APRIL 11th!!

These photos are from Ho’okipa but Dave took a great shot of Ledges too. Look below..

Ledges looked amazing! I heard many guys were getting great tubes rides in the harbor.
Its been amazing to see here. The waves are BIG, the biggest I have seen for awhile. The spray off the waves have been extra large too because of the strong kona winds.

My brother Matt and I back in the good ol’ dayz.

Cheers!

Everything about Mama’s is so awesome! From the food, to decorations, to the good vibe, to friends that work there and just everything! Love it!

The Black Pearl dessert is so pretty but the Kuau Pie is the best!
The surf was perfect.

Going the back way home is a little windy but really really beautiful.
Not knowing exactly how the conditions were on the west side we headed out anyways to check it and scored!!

Driving around the backside was windy but beautiful.

It has been big with messy onshore winds but still fun to get out in the water at Kanaha with all the friends. Congrats to Kev for coming back with a 3rd place finish in Cabo Verde! Woo!

A silly unsuccessful jumping pic… : )
Got to love the shakas!

watch for it! The windsurfing of Maui will be a video feature!

It so awesome for someone to be focused and determined to do a sport. These kids went out everyday for 5 or more hours for 4 days and in the end were doing great. They were catching waves all by themselves, standing up, turning and paddling back out for another. So cool! Great Job to all of them!

After getting every one surfing we thought they could try to do stand-up paddling too! Again, they all did great and even started to catch waves on the SUP boards. It was an amazing day with beautiful blue warm water and clear skies. These kids are very lucky to have such a fun opportunity like this. I hope they stick to it because it just gets more fun. For me, surfing/windsurfing/SUP has given me so many great memories of traveling, friends, cultures, languages and laughter! I love it and owe so much to water sports like these.

The conditions were perfect to begin surf lessons. We headed to the south side and everyone did super well!

At the end of the day everyone stood up and rode a wave. They were all stoked!

We even got to see an endangered monk seal getting some sun.

I do not think I ever windsurfed with my brothers before. Today I got two of my three brothers out in the water to windsurf. My oldest brother is visiting for a bit, so we were all able to sail together. I was so excited to finally sail with them because the last time I remember being down at Kanaha with both of them was when I was learning to water start.

Thank You Dave Baker for the great shots!

Be the effect.. the Butterfly Effect! ; )
Wow! The surf today was just epic. I had a amazing morning session out at Ho’okipa and ever minute the waves were pulsing and getting bigger and bigger. I got shacked on a little end bowl barrel which I am still smiling about!
There were breaks in between sets and then a huge clean up wave would come through. It was super fun till it got too big to stay out in the water.
The lefts were just pealing across and so amazing to see!
You could see the lines in the ocean from the swell for miles.
We saw a few wipe outs and boards washed up to the rocks
I was hanging on tight!!
I received a shirt from Women Ignite and just love it! The material, fit and especially the soul behind the company is so inspiring.
What is it? It is a way to promote the idea of women, of empowerment, of organic clothing.
It’s all these things. It is, in fact, beautiful, unique images of women doing activities we love to do: climbing, windsurfing , diving, yogaing, etc., all printed on organically produced clothing. The site will become a place where women can find resources, stories, and inspiration while also spotlighting exceptional female athletes, scholars, and women’s groups.
What does this mean to you? There are a bunch of items up for sale. Get in now and you can buy! And by buying, you get really great products, and you help push this needed business forward. Yippee for all of us.
A brief description of what’s available:
T-shirts - 100% organic cotton, female cut
Sweatshirts - Soft-as-can-be organics
Hats - Railroad style, organic
Jerseys - Cute with stripes, narrow cut
Why Shari created it? The idea was born while vacationing in Maui and not being able to find a single t-shirt showing a woman windsurfing. She realized she could not only fill the niche of providing images of women on clothing, but do it in an environmentally friendly manner.
So please go over and check it out, while it’s fresh!

Yesterday I went surfing and had the craziest wipeout! Not one thing happened but three! Keep in mind it is a new board too!
The leash broke..
then the board hit me on the head…
and the fin broke off by hitting my arm!!
Crazy huh! I was lucky and swam to the baord just before it got into the rocks.. fheww!! And lucky I didn’t get hurt!
p.s. the cool paint job is by Paige Alms!! Click here to see her ripping
The first real NW swell of the season hit today. Everyone was out somewhere around the island. I went to Ho’okipa. It was uncrowded and pretty fun. I haven’t been in waves like today for a while so it got a little getting used to!
Earlier Nayra, John and I checked out a secret little pool.
My camera is broke, so thanks Nayra for the fun pics!

The morning started on the Plage de la Madrague of the Ventilo Show. Girls of all ages and levels of windsurf showed up to take part in the second France edition. The winds were on and off so we decided to try SUP. I began by doing a stretch warm up and then a SUP beginning instruction clinic. For many girls it was their first time trying this sport and they all picked it up quickly. As we were paddling around the wind picked up. All the girls were full of energy and ready to take on the next mission. We decided to all hop on windsurf and tandem windsurf gear.
It was so fun to go up and down the beautiful coast from Al’Manare to Hyere. It is a beautiful location and can tell why people like to come vacation here.
After the event we were surprised by some rain at the end of the day as well as tshirts from a local company called local do mar.
It was a great experience and hope the girls will come visit Maui for the Butterfly Effect there!
Thank You Dakine for being such a great Sponsor!
Also, thank you to all the Butterfly girls, Steve from the Ventilo Show, and so many others. Much Mahalos!!

This is a pic of my new best friend in France, Laure! She was so helpful for the Butterfly Effect here and helped me with some important translations to finalize the event here!
I have learned so many new words in so many new languages, my tongue is so tied up now!
I don’t know what I speak these days! haha
Pics will be posted shortly! Check back in a bit!

I am very sad to say Ciao to all my friends in Jericoacoara. I miss them all so much already. They all made me feel so welcomed and made me have some of the best moments of my life. Everyday was incredible and just goes to show a simple life can lead to so much happiness.
The bus ride back to Fortaleza felt so long and was so sad! I hope I return to this place soon! I love it!
Bene is teaching me the Goiter and this one I almost got!

We headed out early in the morning from Jeri to go to Itarema.
It is a beautiful location with flat water inside a sand bar and waves on the other side.
After hours of sailing it was good to sit down for the Brazilian lunch.. fish, rice and beans with agua de coco! Yum!
No time to waste. We loaded the boat to a new beautiful location!

Thank You Gustavo!
This event was so amazing! It gives me chills on my arm just thinking how cool it was! I loved it and I know everyone else had a good time too! I have so much to tell, I don’t even know where to start!
Here are just a few pics from a friends camera of the beginning of the event in Fortaleza and Cumbuco. There were a total of 31 girls and almost half windsurf and half kitesurf. The total distance we covered was over 50 KM ( Cumbuco to Taiba). We stopped half way in Pecem and had a beautiful presentation of every kind of fruit! It was so wonderful!
We have many beautiful professional photos and video.
The Dona Florinda Bus took us from Fortaleza to our starting destination Cumbuco!
So fun!! We were all anxious to start the mission!
Kite Cabana Cumbuco welcomed us to rig, stretch, and eat before we headed downwind.
Dona Florinda customized our Dakine lyrcas.
Butterflies from around the world were a part of this Butterfly Effect Brazil including Germany, Sweden, Israel, Norway, and from other locations around Brazil. It is so cool because now we want to have a Butterfly Effect in each of these countries!
Here all the girls finished signing up and off we went!
More photos are to come stay posted..;)
Thank you so much to all our sponsors:
DAKINE
Dona Florinda, Termaco
Naish, Hotsails, Mormaii, Club Ventos, Nivel contrucoes, Wobben Wind power, Kite Cabana
Besides Juliana Farias doing a great job organizing this event we had many many helpers from the beginning like Matt Howard making the flyers, Doris helping with everything, the design guys at Windzen, all the Butterflies for participating, the family supporting and so many more. Aloha to All!
The night before the Butterfly Effect we had a meeting of how exactly the event will happen. We discussed the plan, safety issues, hazards, staying in groups, going around the Pecem Pier ( 5 KM out to sea!!) and much more.
We were really excited to get our personalized Dakine Butterfly Effect Flags!! Everyone wanted to hold one!! Super cool! Thanks Dakine and Mormaii for making them!
We did some training and organizing for the event in Cumbuco. TV Cidade of Fortaleza came along to film for their News Program.
My Brazil video is on the Hot Sails Website too!

After Prea we stayed in Jericoacoara. The city is built in sand and you walk everywhere. Its so cool! I love it. Surf in the morning, windsurf all day, drink agua de coco, watch the sunset on the sand dunes, capoeira, forro dancing, panderia.. life is good!
We have been spreading the word about the Butterfly Effect and many local and visitor girls will be participating in the event now!
Windy days in Prea
I am not much a freestlyer but I tried my best and got second. Juliana won and Ivana got third.
The trophies are so awesome. They are a little version of the fishing boats that you see all over the beaches here in Brazil.
The Jeri local girls rip! Taina will be one to look out for!
Ivana in her new Dona Florinda wetsuit. Dona Florinda is providing a big pink bus to transport the girls to and from the Butterfly Effect! This is just one of the fun things planned. This Butterfly Effect is going to be so awesome!

We finally made it to Prea. We left at 5 in the evening from Fortaleza. The ride is usually around 5 hours, so we were planning to arrive in Prea around 10PM. We ended up getting lost not once but twice in the middle of the night. I think we arrived at the pousada around 3 in the morning. We were so happy to see the pousada and sleep!
The next morning we woke up early to prepare for the first day of the competition. The first contest was a downwind race from Prea to Jericoacoara. I am not sure exactly how far it is but it is far! We all began together on the beach for the race and than pretty soon there was nobody around in the water. No body in sight. This is when the ocean seems sooo big. Being in these waters for the first time all alone far out and far down wind became a little spokey!! I finally spoted some one and stayed close until we arrive to the finish line. I thought I was the only one that this happened to, but everyone said the same. In the end, Good Experience! I want to go again now that I know where I am going! Juliana finished first, I second, and Ivana 3rd. Good results with all the friends!

The Grand Pavois is the second biggest tradeshow in France after Paris for boats and water sports. In the Sunday news of the Grand Pavois they wrote an article about the Butterfly Effect. They talked about how it was such a nice surprise for a group of ladies to pass by in their Dakine Aloha wear paddling on Naish stand up boards through the harbour. It gave a whole new outlook on getting on the water in the boat world.
I was lucky to catch the train from La Rochelle to Paris with a friend from the Grand Pavois. Ben is one of the designers for Airush and had some time to kill in Paris. I had time between my flight too, so we checked out the Eiffel Tower! For him it was no big deal but for me it was pretty cool to see!
The train was so fun. This guy sang for us the cocoracha song! ahah!
The Butterfly Effect France was the best Butterfly Effect yet! We had so much fun and it was so unique.
This Butterfly Effect showed exactly what a “Butterfly Effect” actually means. We were a small group just like a small butterfly and we had a huge outcome in La Rochelle just like how butterfly effect spreads!
The wind was light and perfect to learn and do SUP. Many people have never seen this sport before here, so it drew in attention from the beach to the harbour.
We did some stretching and hula! Some of girls tried SUP before and a few it was for the first time. The first timers did so good!
As we entered the harbour, people started clapping. We made many friends along the way in the boats who gave us french cheese, chocolate and strawberries!
I loved the whole french atmosphere. It was great! I am still smiling!
We opened up the sport to more than just the beach crew, but to the boaters too! They all loved the idea and want one for their boats!
Spreading the aloha with the hawaiian floral rashguards of DAKINE!
DAKINE and NAISH donated some many gifts for the participates.
Thank you so much! With out them it wouldn’t have been possible.
THANK YOU DAKINE AND NAISH!
Besides all the wind/water sport booths, the main attraction at the Gran Pavois is all the boats.
After checking out the boats, we headed back to see the fake wake machine.
At last we hit the water an hour away in I’ll de Re. Its an island right in front of La Rochelle.
Antoine showed us his SUP spot. It was so pretty. The waves were easy, long and glassy. The sun was going down to our right and the moon was rising our left.
So Beautiful!
I always knew Antoine Albeau from Maui, so its fun to see him in his local spot of I’ll de Re!
WOW! Finally made it here, board / sail bags and all!
Its not quite the Eiffel tower but close enough for me right now. I hope I get to see the real thing while I am here!
We loaded up Yann’s dads van and chilled out a bit thinking I had plenty of time to catch my train.
Then they loaded me up with some french chocolate crossiant roles for the rest of my journey.
Catching the train in Paris is absolute chaos! I was so thankful for these two that I met on the bus who totally took care of me after I missed my train.
I didn’t know it was a hour bus ride to the train station! And then you should see how long the train is!! I couldn’t believe how much I had to walk. I didn’t even get to my right place on the train because the bell rang while I was trying to get to it!
La Rochelle looks cute and beautiful so far. I can’t wait to explore a bit more tomorrow!
This sign made me feel close to home. ” JAWS”
Cute little french house
I am so exhausted after all this traveling, can’t wait to get some sleep!
20+ miles later we finally make to Kaupo! This was once in a life time hike! I don’t think I will be abe to do it again!
Right now my legs and so sore! We left in the morning from the top of Haleakala and camped at the last cabin “Paliku”. It is an amazing hike. Beauty was everywhere and all around where ever you see, smell, feel, taste, and hear. Simply amazing. It was a challenging hike, but through every challenge comes out more reward, strength, and beauty. The next day we walked all day down the Kaupo valley. We were so high up on the mountain walking straight down..down ..down.. it seemed like forever! At one point on the way down our group was a little separated and I was following two of the guys. They went around a corner and past some cows, so I thought I would wait to pass the cows with the others. I waited and they never came around the corner. I walked back up the hill and no one was there! I couldn’t see anybody and I was all by myself high up on the mountain. I started screaming for them but there was no answer. A little panic set in and started screaming louder. Finally, I heard them and they were on a whole other trail! We met up and I showed them where the others went. This was super lucky for them and I because if not I would have had to hike all the way down by myself and they would have ended up who know where! After that we all stuck together like glue! That was one lucky thing that happened. We also were lucky and happened to know the people that rented the cabin, so we got to stay warm all night by the fire. The last lucky thing that happened was when we came out of the kaupo valley we still had to walk all the way down a long road to get picked up. There just happened to by a truck that cam out of no where and gave us a ride down to the bottom. We were so tired by this time that it was a blessing to get a ride!
Juliana and I were so excited about the Dakine Butterfly Effects that will happening. In September and October it will be in France, UK, and Brazil. We had to go a do this hike for the goodness of the Butterfly Effect. We hiked for good energy to be in each effect that will happen. We will be posting more info about each effect shortly.
Very blessed trip. I am happy we all made it back safe, sound and stoked!
the Lily pop
Guerrilla Jazz
I am so stoked! I finally landed a back loop. I couldn’t believe it. After that happened I was so excited that I went for a forward loop and snapped my mast in half. I had a long swim in but it was ok since I landed a backloop!
The waves have been pretty good too.
Forward…but not the one that broke the mast!
Pascal and Levi ripping
These photos were taken from Yann (above).. off the lip!
Checking it out and meeting the Naish Kailua gang.
There is everything there, lessons, rentals, all water sport gear, SUP, clothes, board making and more!
I love how they have all the old windsurf equipment on display. Its so cool to see how windsurf has evolved. I can’t believe some of the equipment they rode!
Kite Department
We had to pack up our gear and mission down a steep hill to the beach.
We were lucky to get Diamond Head with pretty strong winds and good size waves. The wind is known to be a little weird, but we were on out 4.7 sails and 65L boards going full speed all day!
It was fun to change it up and sail waves in port tack conditions since Maui is almost always a starboard tack.
When the winds died off in the afternoons it was fun surfing too!
The winds were a little gusty for the morning races and totally died out for the afternoon sailing.
The womens slalom was in the morning and I was on my Naish Slalom board and a 5.5 sail.
I am really getting to like the whole slalom division. I think I felt the most comfortable this weekend and kept scoring higher places every time we raced. I got a 5th, 3rd, and 2nd place which averaged out to 4th place in the end. The best I have done for this catagory. I was stoked!..and the womens division is pretty tough here. One mess up and your getting last!
Maliko to Kahului Harbour (9.5 Miles)
Dean, Bernd, and Norm get ready for the race at Maliko
We had to paddle far out of Maliko to the start line, deep into the dark-blue water!
Robby’s angels get on the stand-up paddle boards too!
In 2 hours 15 minutes I reach the finish line at the canoe club in Kahului.
Finishing 4th in my division.
Dave Kalama finished 1st out of everybody, in just a little over an hour.
Pau Hana!
It was a long day out on the water and very exhausting. I was happy the winds kicked in a bit to make the paddle a lot easier. I went on my 10′6 Naish Board which isn’t really made for long distance races, so I can’t wait to try out a bigger, more racier board next year. I think I could do a lot better with the right equipment. I would also definitely take a camel-pack with me next time too. I was so thirsty half way through the race and all I could think about was water! Makes me thirsty again just thinking about it! ha!
Over all it was a great day. At the end I was worried about leaving my car in Maliko and just wanted to go back to make sure it was ok. Then I got there and my car was unlocked and I thought Ah oh! Nothing seemed missing or anything inside and then I remember I just forgot to lock it! It just sat there all day unlocked! Crazy I know, but Lucky everything was just the way I left it!
Quicksilver Cup is the third race of the series here on Maui. The winds were perfect today. I did the waveboard division with my 4.7 and did the best I have done so far, I got 3rd place. Except, in the start of the race, right before the flag I jumped off a chop and broke the base. The jetski came and got me, I switched for a new base, and went back out just making it in time for the second race. I was glad I broke it where I did with the jetski there to come help me. If that would have happened at Ho’okipa it would have been a disaster!

When things in your lives seem almost too much to handle,
when 24 hours in a
day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2
cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some
items in front of
him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very
large and empty
mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He
then asked the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
them into the jar.
He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open
areas between the
golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jarwas
full. They agreed
it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it
into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything els e. He asked once
more if the jar
was full. The students responded with an unanimous
’yes.’
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under
the table and
poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling
the empty space
between the sand. The students laughed.
’Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided,
’I want you to recognize
that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are
theimportantthings–your family, your children, your
health, your friends
and your favorite passions–and if everything else was lost
and only they
remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job,
your house and
your car. The sand is everything else–the small stuff.
’If you put the sand
into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no
room for the pebbles or the
golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your
time and energy on
the small stuff you will never have room for the things
that are important
to you.
’Pay attention to the things that are critical to your
happiness. Play with
your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your
spouse out to
dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean
the house and
fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first–the
things that really
matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the
coffee
represented. The professor smiled. ‘I’m glad you
asked. It just goes to show
you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s
always room for a
couple of cups of coffee with a friend.’
Another long day at Kanaha for the second race of summer. The morning I sailed in the women slalom division and the afternoon I sailed in the women and men wave board division. There were some brutal gusts that came through the day, but over all it was a great day for racing.
Dakine put together a great ending ceremony with great food, trophies, and prizes.
Rob spreads the aloha with some watermelon!
Tracy wins a cute new Dakine cooler.
The whole Dakine gang says cheese!
Happy Birthday to my brother Matt! YAy!!
Wow! I had a very crazy day of kiting. First my harness broke and my kite was full of power that I wasn’t sure what to do with. I had to ditch my board and land my kite. After I got my kite down I spent almost two hours looking for my board which ended up way downwind and I had to swim out to get it. Luckily, I had to work at kite beach which gave me more time to look for my board. When I got back to my kite it was deflated! Not sure why. I am too tired to figure that out now but hopefully its not that big of a deal!
I love this song…but I think these guys might like it more than me! haha!
I love my african dance class!
Adboulaye Camara is from Guinea West Africa and teaches classes around the world. He will be a guest teacher here on Maui for a month!
There is always live drumming too.
The first race of summer. In the morning the winds were a little off and on, but by the afternoon the wind was consistent and strong. In the morning I sailed in the wave-board division and placed 5th. In the afternoon I sailed in the women slalom division and placed 5th again. I was sailing on a slalom board and wave sail, so for the upcoming races I hope I will be able to sail on the right equipment with a slalom sail. I think it will race a lot better.

Off the Lip asked me about my worse wipeout during this past winter…just in case I forgot about it!;)

P.S. If you think its a bad wipeout, at the bottom of his webpage you can add some points! ahah
The winds were light today and just perfect for me to try launching and kiting at Lanes.
It was a little scary walking over the reef but I had some friends guiding me on what to do, and once I got out it was really fun. I caught my first wave on a kite, tried bottom turning and going down wind on the wave…had some gnarly tea bagging and falls but all good!!

Off the lip is the newest windsurfing website created by Griffin. The website gives a whole new outlook on windsurfing and other related topics. Its not just a blog but has dvd reviews, rants, travel tips. and a ton of other funny and interesting stuff to check out.

my buddy Paige just put up a super cool video..check it out below
Due to technical difficulties I’ve been away from my blog, but I’m back!!! Post to follow…..
A couple days ago we had a good size swell on the north shore. Kevin Pritchard made a video from the past days before it got flat. He even got a little bit of video of me which I am super stoked to see since I hardly ever get to see video of myself sailing. Now I just want there to be waves again so I can practice more!

My yoga teacher sent me this video. Its really cool and interesting.Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few brain scientists would wish for: One morning, she realized she was having a massive stroke. As it happened — as she felt her brain functions slip away one by one, speech, movement, understanding — she studied and remembered every moment. This is a powerful story about how our brains define us and connect us to the world and to one another.Or click this link http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/229
This is my first time editing a video. Eyal Shelef filmed it and I am playing around to see if I can make something! It was super fun trying to match the music with the video but definitely needs lots of work!
Its only the start of the Butterfly Effect at Ho’okipa and the stop over at Sprecks.
The Butterfly Effect was a great success and tons of fun!
There was over 5o girls who signed up windsurfing, kite surfing, or stand-up paddling. We all enjoyed Antonys Coffee and home made banana bread at Ho’okipa. Maria Souza lead out in stretching and safety before the big launch. We surfed, sailed, and laughed our way down to Kanaha stopping at sprecks to pick up a few more “butterflies”.
We definitely worked up our appetite and enjoyed hot pizza delivered from Flatbread. Dakine, Naish, Matiko Shoes, and Wings Hawaii all donated to make great gift bags for all the girls who completed the down wind.
Individualized gifts were given as well, such as confidence to launch at a new spot, encourgement to go the whole way, courage to be out in the deep blue, new friendships with all the “butterflies”, knowledge on water sport techniques, laughter and fun under a beautiful maui sun!
After we ate and passed out gifts and raffles we had windsurf and stand-up paddling clinics held by Ann Marie, Juliana, and Maria.
It still didn’t end there! Coach from the Naish Pro Center held an after party at the shop. It had great drinks and pupus just right after a long day on the water!
Thanks so much for all who participated and all who helped.
We are already planning the next Butterfly Effect for Maui and it will be even bigger and better!
Thank You!
This weekend we held the 2nd Annual Butterfly Effect.
We couldn’t have asked for better conditions for the all women down-winder from Ho’okipa to Kanaha.
The waves were a fun size and the wind was not too strong or too light, but just right!
Kite surfers, windsurfers and stand-up paddlers all met at 10:00 in Ho’okipa.
Everyone was excited and anxious to get out on the water!
Maria Souza lead out in some warm up stretches,
and then we were ready to launch!

Check out the dog in the video below.. he was sleeping the whole time even with all the music and noise around!
Get ready for the next Butterfly Effect on Maui!!
We will be starting the event at 10:00 AM at Ho’okipa Beach Park.
If your not comfortable with doing the whole downwinder from Ho’okipa to Kanaha we will be stopping at Spreks where you can join from there for the rest of the way.
It is going to be great with food, gifts, tips and more!! Be sure to join us!
If your interested contact me so I can give you more info.

I was out in Lahaina today and meet a friend from Brazil to show her more of Maui than just Ho’okipa!

It was really beautiful on the south side with a lot of whales breaching.

Leisa enjoying the Maui sunset
Kevin Pritchard just put up a really nice new website. It has a ton of cool stuff on it like lessons, blog, rental, and more! Click here or check it out at www.pritchardwindsurfing.com
My brother really wanted to try stand-up paddling, so I thought I would take him for a down- winder. Even though he has never done it before, I knew he could handle it. We launched from Ho’okipa and ended at Kanaha.
Juliana joined in and then Michi, Norm, and Bernd had the same idea.

We had the whole ocean to ourselves…and the turtles.. and whales.. and hoping that was it!

The waves were small but fun to ride. Passing through each spot was super fun with lots of little waves. They were a lot of people out too. Laurant did a really nice push loop at specks, Conner and Jaeger were ripping at camp one, and Konan and Bruno joined in for some cake Juliana made at Kanaha. It was a beautiful day.

Took a Maui Ohana pic, then packed up our stuff.
Juliana and I thought of it as a warm up for the next Butterfly Effect on Maui coming up in April!
Went sailing at Ho’okipa today, the waves were small and the wind was weird.
I have been using a board Levi gave me a while back since my boards are out of commission at the moment. The board had no grip so we put on a homemade grip layer on top the board. Now its a problem of being too grippy and really scratchy. It already cut my finger just barely touching it. I have to be careful not to fall on it!
Today the wind was ON! Super windy. I did a jump and landed really flat. I didn’t realize the board snapped in the middle, but it did. Now, my 55L is snapped and my 65L has a ding in it that I just noticed! Yikes!
Ahh! Maui.
Feels good to be back home. I went for a yoga session this morning which was very needed and appreciated after traveling. Later in the day the wind was funky at Ho’okipa so I went down to Kanaha for a bit where it was better. I can’t believe how warm the water is here! I know I will get used to it and think its cold after a couple weeks. :)
Coming back from Australia and New Zealand where driving is the opposite, I have been getting a little mixed up! I didn’t think it would effect me and my driving but when I went out driving this morning I went on the wrong side of the road! I couldn’t believe it. I did it twice today. Hopefully I got it down now!
We went along the Great Ocean Road and found a spot where Koalas hang out.
Up in the Eucalyptus trees we spotted a lot of them.
I found out that they sleep 18 hours a day, they don’t drink much water at all but get 90% hydrated by the Eucalyptus leaves, and are threatened by bush fires, land clearings, and pythons. Pretty interesting!

Most of them were taking naps…

except this one was eating some leaves.

We heard that the people at the zoo tie leaves to a stick and feed them, so we tried.
Didn’t work so well!
I surfed Bells Beach morning and night. It was so fun. In the evening there were only a couple people out and lots of waves to catch. The waves were between 2 ft to 6 ft. I would be sitting on the outside catching waves and then all of a sudden a freak set would come wiping everyone out! I think the swell might be coming in for tomorrow. Who knows though, the weather here tricks you all the time. Its hot and prefect waves one second, then you go grab your board and the on shore winds picked up messing up all the waves and super cold!
Got it get it when its good!
Finally I saw some Kangaroos today! I was so excited about seeing them all over the golf course. We pulled over to take a look.

I thought they were kind of funny looking and not as cute as I imagined…

but they are still pretty awesome creatures.

I got pretty close to one,

then chased ‘m down the hill!
I tried driving here in Australia. Its so awkward, everything seems unbalanced for some reason. Its funny to see these signs posted for visitors like me!

We drove the Great Ocean Road and stopped along the way to several surf spots. It was a great beach day and it seemed like everyone was at the beach. It was packed everywhere!
This is the view at Teddys Lookout.
I loved passing these signs. I still haven’t seen one yet! Still waiting!
The Butterfly Effect Australia turned out to be a fun hot day in the sun. There was no wind and perfect glassy water to do Stand Up paddling.

We got the boards and paddles from the SHQ Surf Shop / Cafe and headed to the beach.

Coby lead the way

There were some first timers out on the water and others that have tried it before.

We did a paddle out and around the harbor and back.
The paddle was really relaxing and the view of the coast was amazing. We also got to see a huge blue jelly fish.
In the end Dakine, Roxy, Naish, and Wings Hawaii donated some awesome gifts for all the girls.
Also a big thanks to Paul and Mike from SHQ, David and Greg for helping out the whole day, and Brenden for taken photos, and all the women who participated.
Good Fun!
SHQ Boardsports has been really helpful in supporting the Butterfly Effect in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks to them and their support the Butterfly Effect will happen this weekend!
Click HERE to visit their website and to find out more info on Butterfly Effect Events.
Today was hot and sunny. We got two fun surf sessions in and an evening bike ride.
This bike ride is like a roller coaster and Alice in Wonderland trail!

We bike over bridges, through trees, over big bumps while going along the coast checking out different bays. We pass by cozy corner, torquay, jan juc, to bells.

Best bike ride ever!!
Its coming up quick!

I woke up early at 4 AM for a flight out of Wellington, New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia.
I am so excited to be here and can’t wait to see more, especially kangaroos!!..i hope! :)
Jeanette and the kids took me to their home beach break, Jan Juc.
The air was frigid and made me hesitate to go for a surf. I went for it any way and the water was a lot warmer than the air. The waves were average with wind blowing them out a little, but since I was traveling around most of the day it felt so good to jump in for a surf.
It started off Saturday morning at 10 AM. There were almost 20 of us gathered around Lake Clearwater in anticipation for the wind.
The wind was very calm through the morning hours, but we still had hope so we began to rig. Tim from the Neilpryde Design Center and I did a step by step rigging example of both fat and skinny masts. While each began with their own sails, Tim and I went around to make sure everyone was confident in their rigging skills and if they had an questions about it.
Nicola from Groundswell surf shop in Christchurch made this lovely event happen. Thanks to her we had a great turn out of ladies, tons of fun, and great windsurfing accomplishments for all of us!

This Butterfly Effect was a bit different from the previous ones because we had a camp. We all spent the night in a cozy little batch with a long drop toilet (!), cooked up a yummy BBQ /Feast, and played some hilarious games!
Dakine New Zealand gave the ladies a bunch of cool gifts from bags to t- shirts to rashies and more!

The second day of the Butterfly Camp and Clinic, we were all awaken by the wind. The winds were light all morning and we were all able to jump into our wetsuits and onto the water.
Before we all headed out, I gave a Heli- tack clinic. In the end there were 5 women pulling off heli-tacks for the first time! It was a great accomplishment and got everyone super stoked!
I had such a great time meeting all the wind-ladies from Auckland to Christchurch! I hope we will be able to do it again next year! The Butterfly Effect Camp and Clinic was a great success for all of us. Thank you so much to all the ladies who came, Nicola and Al, Groundswell, Canterbury Windsurf Association, Tim Bamford, Charles for the quiver lending, Raymond for the entertainment, Naish, Dakine, Kaenon, Wings Hawaii, Wind & Kite Magazine, and everyone else who helped out. Thank You so much for helping me make it happen!
Much Aloha!!
Haven’t had the chance to check out the main city of Wellington yet. I meet up with William from the local windsurfing and kitesurfing New Zealand magazine called Wind&Kite. You can click HERE to check out the mag online. We checked out some of the famous streets in Wellington as well as some cool cafes. The pic above is the New Zealand parliament building and some Maori statues.
Afte a hot day in town, its always refreshing to jump off the Wharf. The water was an amazing temperature and like always so beautiful!

The Bill has been deferred!
According to Sen. Clayton Hee during this afternoon’s Senate Committee hearing,
there has been “an extraordinary amount of testimony in opposition to the
bill”, and the Senator who submitted the legislation requested the bill be
deferred so “they can work on it”.
A big Mahalo to everyone who took the time to email, phone or visit the
committee members. Nice to know the system can actually work if we all get
involved.

The Wings Girls
Wings Hawaii have a brand new super cute collection out. They just put up their new website, which I have to say my brother did an amazing job making the website! Great website, great clothes!
It was time to head out of Raglan and back down towards Wellington. We decided to go inland a bit and stop over in Lake Taupo since there was a cozy little batch welcoming us.
We had a great windsurf and surf trip up north. We couldn’t ask for anything more perfect. When we went to Taranaki there was wind and when we left it died off. When we went to Raglan there was a perfect swell and when we left the swell left too. When we arrived in Lake Taupo there was beautiful sunny weather and the day we left it started to pour rain. We have been really lucky and thankful its worked out the way it did.

Now I am in Wellington for a bit before I go back to the south island to do an all woman windsurf clinic and camp. We lucked out again and its absolutely beautiful today!
We kept on scoring awesome, sunny, and beautiful days in Raglan. We surfed till our noses were red, arms couldn’t pick up even a pencil, back ached, eyes permanently squinted, feet cut up, but the only thing left that we were able to have energy for was smiling from riding such great waves! We couldn’t get enough the the epic waves and were sad to say goodbye.
The wave swells were visible from miles away breaking along the coast line as they moved towards shore.

The locals were ripping and amazing to watch!
P.S. If my blog posts don’t make sense and have spelling errors, etc. above is the reason why. By the time I get back from long days out in the water I am zonked! They make sense to me at the time, but when I look back I can see I must have been really really tired when I wrote the post!
Waitomo in Maori means Wai ( water) tomo ( to enter). These caves were so beautiful to walk through, especially at the end when you jump into a boat and ride through a dark cave full of glow worms above you. It was pitch black with millions of glow worms that look like stars. It was really awesome to see.
Making a home away from home. The space tent, the baron and the extremely tired windsurfers
Made some yummy pasta even in the ghetto camping ground..

We have been camping in good and kind of ” niggly” campgrounds on the way up to Raglan. This spot we were glad to get out of, but at least it was close to the beach.
Taranaki - Like no other
We found a good windsurfing and kite beach called Waitara.
We arrived at Waitara Beach and it was packed with windsurfer and kiters. The break is port tack and the wave goes on and on. You can catch it from the outside and have 10+ hits on it all the way to the inside. We had such a great time and meet some really cool people.
After a long day on the water I was beat!

We are doing the camping thing, so we were super thankful to Gerald ( who we had just meet that day on the beach!) who opened up his home, hot shower, cold beers, and New Zealand hospitality to us for the night! Even another windsurfer from Switzerland joined us. We had such a blast hanging out and talking about windsurfing, that Gerald will be on his way to Maui soon!! Thanks again to Gerald, aka “Boots”!
We are free like birds, when it comes to our decision making. One moment we are set on one location and the next we are going to the complete opposite.
Our first idea was to go the east, but we checked the forecast for Taranaki on the west side. The forecast for Taranaki already had waves and wind, while the east coast is waiting a couple days for the waves to arrive. We traveled up the coast today and arrived in the evening. It looks like we will be getting some fun port tac windsurfing conditions at Ahu Ahu or maybe up the coast a bit more to Waitara.
There is an awesome little surf backpacker/ hostel called Wave Haven which is located just before Oaqura.
There is a Bill that needs to be stopped because it could mean strict restrictions for windsurfing and kitesurfing on Maui. It is planning to make a rule of having a 200′ distance between surfers and windsurfers, which would mean we couldn’t sail at the Point of Ho’okipa if there is a surfer at Pavilions. I am writing to object to the proposed legislation regarding windsurfers and kite surfers. Windsurfing was effectively born and grown in Hawaii and hence a lot of business and tourism reflects this, many people visit the islands and make them their homes to be able to practice these sports in some of the best recognized locations in the world. At the very least a thorough assessment of the economic and social impact of this legislation should be made before even considered for approval. There is no doubt however for a concern of safety amongst swimmers and surfers when mixed with windsurfers or kite surfers but there is already legislation in place to accommodate these users; namely windsurfing and kite surfing banned before 11 am at Kanaha beach park this allows adequate time for surfers to be able to enjoy the light morning winds. Also Hookipa Beach Park also uses the “10 man surfer” rule to good effect to segregate water users. Typically very little windsurfing takes places in the morning hours which is the ideal time for surfing when the wind is light, in my opinion this works well and accommodates all users well. I am not sure where the figure of 200’ came from, perhaps in relation to kite surfers and their long kite lines, if this is true a distinction between windsurfing and kite surfing should be made as the windsurfer is a much more compact unit and does not take up nearly as much room as a kite surfer. More consideration to this distance should be made and perhaps separate rules for kite surfing and windsurfing if this legislation has to be made. I am interesting into the reasoning behind this legislation, windsurfing and kite surfing only operates from a select few beaches on the islands leaving many, many more for surfing, swimming or any other water recreation. I do not see how this legislation could be healthy for the islands from a social or economic point of view. Any further questions or information please contact me below. We have been checking out the forecast to see if we will be able to catch some good waves. It looks like a nice size swell is going to be arriving this weekend on the east side. We have a couple last minute packing and then we are off to find some waves!
We picked up a super cool travel guide called, New Zealand Surfing Guide. Its the best surf guide book I have ever seen. You can check out their website, swell, webcams, etc. at www.surf2surf.com.
Today the wind kicked in just enough for an afternoon sail. It was a really nice spot with just friends out in the water, 3 windsurfers and 1 kiter.

It had been on my mind ever since I arrived and saw it, Ward Island. I saw Ward Island out in the Bay and just had to sail to it.It was further than I thought ( about 1.5 Miles ), but it was so cool to arrive on your own private island. I’ll give you easy directions if you ever want to go there, launch and just keep sailing straight ahead!

The inside was perfect for light wind tricks.
After your sail you can walk straight back to your house, de-rig and warm up in a nice hot shower!
While we traveled down and around to the Coast to Coast Race, we had the chance to check out some really amazing spots. Passing through Arthur’s Path we climbed up the mountain to a huge waterfall called the Devils Punch Bowl.

Seal Sanctuary

a lake in Kumara

and a ton of swimming holes straight off the road!
Saturday was the big race day. Our support crew ” Team Wizzel” were all up at 4 AM helping our athlete Will “Wizzel” get ready for his longest day ever. The challenge began on the west side in Kumara and the finish line was 243 K (151 Miles) away on the beach in Chirstchurch.
3K ( 1.8 Miles) run followed by a 55K (34 Miles) bike
33K (20.5 Miles) run through a mountain range boulder hoping, crossing rivers, and down a river valleys.

Another 15 K (9.32 Miles) cycle up to the river where they start the 67K (41.63 Miles) kayak

With matching Feed the Wizzle t-shirts, Team Wizzel was always ready and prepared to help Wizzle with the next transition.

Celebrating after completing the 70K ( 43.49 Miles) cycle! Wizzel finished in 14 hours and 43 minutes!
An amazing job that we are all proud of.
Good Job Wizzle!
William Bamford is the competitor of the 243 KM Coast to Coast Race over the Southern Alps on the south island.
Its an all out race with cycling, running and kayaking.
There are 4 of us being his support team to assist through out the race.

Pencarrow, the first light house of New Zealand.
We caught the ferry from Wellington to Picton, which is on the south island. It was calm and beautiful day to catch the ferry since it can be really harsh at times.

Entering the picture perfect south island
Every second I can’t help but say the same thing, “Its so beautiful!”
I went for my first sail in New Zealand at Lyall Bay. It was early, cold and windy!! It turned out to be really fun. I had all my equipment except one screw that goes on the top of the board. The thing about windsurfing is if you forget one tiny piece your not going to get in the water. I ended up borrowing a friends board for a bit just to get out there.
Maranui is the place to eat after your session. Great food and atmosphere!
Tommy is the local windsurfer who took me to this place at 7 AM! I think it was my earliest session ever!
I arrived in New Zealand two days ago. Its been a little crazy. My clothes bag hadn’t arrived until today, so I was running around in the same old clothes for a while. Then I read my emails and had an email from the airport police saying they have my passport and travel wallet. I hadn’t even notice yet, but I must have left my passport in one of the trolleys at the airport. I couldn’t believe it, but was happy it was in a safe zone. I was also happy that the airlines gave me $100 to buy some clothes. Everything worked out in the end and today the sun is out making it look so beautiful here.
When its windy you can sail to this island. I hope to do it soon!
Eastbourne- New Zealand

PArty WaVe!
Surprise! Surprise! Haleakala has snow on it, its been freezing here! I know anyone who reads this that is from the mainland is going to think that I am crazy and Hawaii is a warm place no matter what, but this winter has been the coldest that I can remember.
The water has been cold and the wind and waves very stromy like.
I have been trying out this new 55L Kids Pro Wave board. Its been super fun, but I haven’t been able to sail to long because I almost freeze into a purple popsicle!
The past couple days were rainy wet days, but I was able to get a fun windsurf session at Kanaha and a super murky eerie surf session at Ho’okipa last night. The sky was dim, hardly anybody was out, and the waves were very unusual breaking far out and then reforming on the inside.
My brother fixed his 4 Wheeler and wanted to take it out for a ride.
We started down the dirt road and all of a sudden a wheel popped loose!
Thankfully we were going slow and on a private road.
We lost a few lug nuts when the wheel fell off so we searched for new ones along the ground. It was a difficult search finding lug nuts too big and too small, but finally we found ones just right.
Diesel was happy to help!
Tim and his favorite toy. He got pulled over one time and the cop just let him go not knowing even where to start with this vehicle. No windshield, no doors, no plates, no nothing.

My friend showed me all of her shells she has been collecting, so I got inspired! I cleaned off the sand and salt from the shells that I collected in Mexico last summer. I am excited to design some jewelry. Maybe I will make some hoop earrings with the shells in it or a necklace. Its a rainy day with no waves or wind, so its a perfect day to break out the wire wrapping!
We made it over to the island after leaving Maui in a whirlwind. The ferry left at 3:00 and we still had to get food and camping stuff organized and it was already 2:00!
.

We made it just barely, but we made it!
Once we got to our camping ground you can tell we worked super hard to put up the tent. There was no goofing around at all!

Our camp site was just right!

And the beach too was perfect.

After a night out on the secret island we headed back home for a big swell hitting the west side of Maui.
The boat ride back was ridiculous. It was sooo choppy and bumpy. The waves were crashing over the whole boat getting everything completely wet! After surviving that we drove up the coast on Maui in hopes of some sailing.
I rigged my 4.5 and had a great sail but it was super chilly.

S turns
Stacy, a friend of Jeanete, was a dolphin trainer at Sea Life Park on Oahu. We had the deluxe treatment of getting up close and personal with the dolphins, and whalphin! A whalphin ( believe it or not!) is a dolphin and whale mix. We also got the chance to feed the seal lions and watch a dolphin show.

I am so excited to start a new year and am anxious to see what will come. I thank 2007 for being so kind to me and keeping me safe while having fun at the same time…traveling to new locations around the world, completeing my two year Associates Degree, learning a new langauge, trying new yoga classes, compassionate communication, teaching my own dance class to friends, turning 21, being thankful I made it out of Mexico, family meetings, being silly with my friends, laughing, loving, never being too serious in life and the list goes on!I have a lot of goals and dreams for the new year.Manifest Destiny!
I hope everyone had a super fantastic holiday!

At least I got some cool poka-dot rain boots!
My mom bakes up a Christmas brunch of cashew french toast. Its my favorite! The batter is only made from cashews and water. The bread gets dipped in the batter and then on the skillet. Super easy and super yummy!

The surf was small but there was still action down at the beach. I taught a surf lesson and my friend Jeannete came out for a surf too.

Below is Claudia , the new surfer girl, paddling out to the break. She caught one long ride that went all the way to shore, hitting the reef and knocking out the fin and the box. At least it was just the board that got damaged and not her or anyone else! I showed Paige what happened to the board and she knew exactly how to fix it so….NO worries!

Paige and her cute pup, Mocha!

This is from the Maui News on Dec. 5 when the huge swell was hitting the north shore of Maui.Surfing star Laird Hamilton aides fellow tow-in surfer
WAILUKU (AP) – Ever in search of the 100-foot wave, extreme surfing star Laird Hamilton came to the aid of a fellow tow-in surfer off Maui’s north shore. Brett Lickle called his dramatic rescue “the most intense thing I’ve been through.’’
Lickle said Hamilton stripped naked so he could tie his surf trunks into a tourniquet after Lickle suffered a huge gash on his leg in a wipeout on what he said was an 80-foot ocean wave.
Lickle, 47, was recovering Wednesday at home in Haiku.
In the incident Monday at a little-known tow-in surf spot called Outer Spreks, Lickle says he was cut by the fin of a board on the Honda AquaTrax watercraft he and Hamilton used to get to the spot where the waves were breaking. He says he was trying to stay ahead of the monster wave, but it crashed down on him.
Hamilton is among extreme surfers who have pioneered in the riding of superwaves that ordinary surfers don’t tackle. He and fellow big-waver Dave Kalama premiered a short film, “All Aboard the Crazy Train,’’ on tow-in surfing in 2005, warning that it wasn’t a sport for the inexperienced. Hamilton also was among surfers performing in feature-length films highlighting the sport, “Step Into Liquid’’ and “Riding Giants.’’
The outer reef off Spreckelsville is a big challenge for big-wave surfers.
“If ever you’re going to find a 100-footer, it’s there,’’ said Lickle.
He and Hamilton had surfed the area in the morning and then returned in the afternoon when the accident occurred. He said only one other tow-in team was on the waves at the time.
Lickle said he was trying to outrun the looming water wall in the watercraft when it caught him. Hamilton was in tow.
“I’m in big trouble,’’ he said he told himself.
After the wave crashed down on them, he reunited with Hamilton about three quarters of a mile offshore.
One fear, Lickle said, was the blood from his wound would attract tiger sharks that hover around the Maui shoreline.
He said that after tying the tourniquet, Hamilton swam “like a bat out of hell’’ for about a half mile to recover the watercraft.
Surfers said ocean conditions on Monday created waves of historic size.
“There were the biggest waves that any of us have seen,’’ said Buzzy Kerbox, another Maui big-wave surfer who saw the Outer Spreks waves but chose to take on another surf spot.
The weather has cleared up and the surf has settled down just enough to reopen Ho’okipa. I am just comfortable enough to get back out in the surf with out being nervous about the close out sets that were coming in the past couple days. There are a few of the surprise huge sets that everyone has to scratch past but still manages to clean up the break, but besides that its been pretty fun out there.

Last night Paia town was packed with people. It was a holiday special night with all the stores open late with raffles, food, wine, galleries and more.

The new Gelato store.. yumm
These photos are from the first surf contest this winter at Ho’okipa that took place last weekend. It was a big deal to advance for the women division because who ever won would be able qualify for the Womens Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay. I was a little bummed out when I missed advancing by 1 point! Oh, well.. maybe next time I will do better!
I was stoked I got some nice shots by Matt Schweitzer.

It was another really windy and stormy day in Maui. My brother tried to get nuts in the papaya puddle but.. you will have to see what happens…
The Kona winds were even stronger than yesterday. The waves died down a little but were still pretty big. Ho’okipa was still closed and more people were sailing at Kanaha or the south side.
The wind was so strong that some trees were even getting knocked over…
signs too!
I went to Kihei with my friends for an evening sail. It was fun and different with the port tack conditions. It was my first time sailing Kihei!
The waves were soooo big today. I think the waves were the biggest I have ever seen. I wanted to go to Jaws, but heard you could only make it down to the lookout point with 4 wheel drive.
My brother went down with his quad and said no one was out.
So, I guess I didn’t miss seeing any action.
Ho’okipa Beach Park closed because of the huge swell.
The waves were washing up past the sand and showers into the dirt parking lot.
Lanes
The waves were too big to surf in so I thought I would help my mom distribute her hand crafted Hawaiian Christmas pillows to the Women helping Women Organization.
Since the swell has been too big for Ho’okipa it forced me to venture out to the other breaks on the island.
Hanamanu and Tavares were super fun. Hanamanu rights were uncrowded and consistent.
I went to another break that used to be a kind of a secret spot. Usually when you go there its only you and your friends. This time I went out and it looked like the point at Ho’okipa…super crowded!
Even with the crowds and all the people I still love to get out in the surf!
My head is getting better now but the black and blue is coming down to my eye. I just saw this clip of me and realized that it wasn’t the mast but the boom that smacked me in the face. Click the link below to see. Beware its pretty gnarly looking!
sets like this were coming through all day long
tons of people checking out the action

Kuau is kind of secret little spot that I always pass by but never check out. I have never launched out of Kuau before. A trick a friend of mine told me about launching there is to step on the white rocks. The white rocks are the ones with more grip and lead down into the water safely.
A Thumbs UP day!
Going a little Kook-ie at Kuau
Many famous water men surf Ho’okipa everyday but it was the first time I have seen professional surfer Rob Machado out in the break. Of course, he was ripping and was awesome to watch. The waves were small and nothing too special but getting into the water is always fun!

Last night was the sickest sunset I have ever seen. The water and sky were golden. I felt like I was on another planet paddling through gold water . It was crazy. I felt like all of us surfers in the water were so rich and full of beauty and life. It was so awesome and everyone was in aw at the scenery. I think everyone out could agree it was one of the best sunsets ever! I wish I had my camera but it still wouldn’t have done it justice.
I thought it was going to be firing this morning but the swell died off a lot. It was still fun but just didn’t have the size. Maybe this evening it will pick up again.
